Welcome to the Garrancho Group! Would you like to know our history?
16 de June de 2022
We can say without any doubt that our family history in the world of hospitality was born in 1966, when Manuel Garrancho, with only 13 years of age, began working as a bellboy in the now defunct Hotel Colon, located in the center of Irun.
He continued his professional training as a waiter in emblematic places such as the Hotel Londres and the Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián or the restaurant “Romantxo” as Maître.
In 1982 and with the experience acquired, he decided to open his own restaurant: The “Trinquete”. Located in the border district of Behobia, his wife Maite and his children David, Virginia and Carlos soon joined the project, turning it into a real family business.
In 1992 and after the closing of the borders in Behobia, Manuel makes the leap to the “Luis Mariano” in the center of Irun as the mythical “Virginia” that would take the middle daughter with Manuel.
David and Carlos would take different paths. David, after studying cooking at the Lycée d’Hôtellerie in Biarritz and working in kitchens such as the Hotel du Crillon in Paris, Martín Berasategui in Lasarte and on his own, he decided to return to San Sebastian and open the Andra-Mari in Gros.
Carlos, on the other hand, in 2003 at the age of 23, opened Virginia Mendibil in the Mendibil Shopping Center in Irun, which today is managed by the Garrancho Group.
Garrancho Group was born in 2015 as a result of the concern of David and Carlos to create a hospitality company and go a step further with the knowledge acquired after running their businesses independently. David already in the old part of town and for 4 years he would manage the Ararlar bar. In 2014 he began his career in Portaletas. Already that year the seed of Grupo Garrancho was born, the result of the concern of the two brothers to start a joint project, and that today continues to grow with great enthusiasm for doing things well and with emblematic premises such as Juanito Kojua (the oldest restaurant in the old part of San Sebastian), Vergara House 1948, Alderdi-Zahar berria, the renovated Fermin Calbetón (formerly Casa Tiburcio) dedicated to the world of pintxos and grilled txuletas and Cortazar, the latter in the center of San Sebastian. Also, and as a result of the curiosity to learn, the Garrancho Group has started its journey in the world of accommodation this 2022 with the project Donosti Old Town Rooms (former Pensión Edorta) in the old part of Donostia, San Sebastian.
We keep walking because we think that the worst thing is to stand still but always with our motto “on our shoulders” and without forgetting it: “OUR GREATEST REWARD IS THE SATISFACTION OF OUR CUSTOMERS AND FRIENDS”.
We leave you with a small photo gallery so you can get to know us better.
Thank you.
